BUGANU FESTIVAL NOT A FREE PASS FOR DRINK-DRIVING, WARNS ESWATINI MAGISTRATE

By Wonderboy Dlamini | 2025-03-12

Motorists attempting to use the Buganu Festival as an excuse for drink-driving have been met with firm rebuke from the courts.

Principal Magistrate Donald Mavuso has made it clear that the cultural event does not absolve individuals from the responsibility of safe driving.

Over the weekend, seven individuals appeared before the Siteki Magistrate’s Court, charged with contravening Section 91 of the Road Traffic Act of 2007 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Several of the accused attempted to mitigate their actions by citing their attendance at the Buganu Festival.

Velimangele Dlamini (35), apprehended at a roadblock in Matsetsa on Saturday, recorded a blood alcohol level of 1.03 mg/l.

In his plea for leniency, Dlamini claimed he had consumed a few cups of buganu at the festival, attending as a cultural observer.

Despite his explanation, Principal Magistrate Mavuso found him guilty, sentencing him to four months in prison or an E800 fine.

Similarly, Senzo Gumbi, caught at a roadblock in Mpaka with a blood alcohol level of 0.99 mg/l, also cited the Buganu Festival.

Gumbi admitted to drinking buganu, mistakenly believing it would not impair his driving. He was also fined E800.

The remaining five offenders faced similar charges and were fined amounts ranging from E500 to E1 000.
