SOCCER - ABSA Premiership side Polokwane City has unleashed an untimely coup with the capture of Mbabane Swallows midfield Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze.
The midfield maestro, who has been linked with a move to Bidvest Wits, sealed the one-year renewable deal with Polokwane City yesterday.
Information gathered is that the deal was handled by a delegation of the team's Chairman Johnny Mogaladi and Swallows officials including the General Manager Sandile ‘Beyond 2 000’ Zwane.
A source close to the matter revealed that Polokwane hijacked the transfer deal regarding the player following a delay from Wits.
“Polokwane were also interested in the player and because the deal between the other South African side was taking a bit longer to finalise, they stepped in and made it official," said the source.
The source added that the players would, however, continue to don the red, blue and white kit until July.
"Pupu’ will continue playing in the CAF Champions League as his contract with Polokwane will start in July when they start their pre-season training,” the source said. Swallows GM Sandile Zwane confirmed they had talks with Polokwane over the weekend.
“I can confirm that we met with Polokwane for talks but they are not the only team we are talking with. Mbabane Swallows will issue a statement once everything has been finalised.” Zwane said their focus now was on their next game tomorrow. The red and white glamour side is preparing for their second clash in the group stages of the tournament against Angolan side Premeiro de Agosto slated for the Mavuso Sports Centre tomorrow.
