Health officials have reported a significant decrease in new HIV infections among men, indicating the positive impact of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programs. The reduction is being attributed to ongoing public health initiatives.
According to the information shared by the ministry of health during the launch of a programme that encourages male pupils to undergo circumcision during the school holidays, the number of new HIV infections among men has dropped from approximately 300 to 40 in the Lubombo region.
Regional Health Administrator Happy Tsabedze highlighted the success of the VMMC programs, stating that 90 percent of men had been circumcised through the program.
The report also mentions that the country has made progress towards achieving the 95-95-95 targets set by UNAIDS, which aim to reduce new infections and improve virus suppression. The success is attributed to collaborative efforts between the government, healthcare workers, and communities.
Lazarus Dlamini, a Regional Health Inspector, spoke on behalf of the Regional Health Officer, emphasising the importance of partnerships in encouraging men to get circumcised. He highlighted the role of schools in promoting health initiatives and encouraging parents to support their children in accessing these services.
Siyabonga Lukhele, a learner from Lubombo Central High School, shared his experience and encouraged other boys to get circumcised.
