SISONKHE pulled off a dramatic comeback to complete a league double over Mbabane Highlanders in an MTN Premier League clash at Mavuso Sports Centre.
The capital city giants were determined to redeem themselves after suffering a 0-2 defeat in the first leg at King Sobhuza II Stadium. However, Sisonkhe had other plans and brought them crashing back to reality.
Highlanders made changes to their starting lineup, with Bhekisisa Dlamini stepping in for first-choice goalkeeper Qiniso ‘Kati’ Nyawo. Coach Meck Mwase’s men started strongly, dominating the opening exchanges and pinning Sisonkhe in their own half.
By the 21st minute, attacking midfielder Siphamandla Maseko had put Highlanders in front, skillfully controlling the ball inside the box before beating goalkeeper Thembela Malaza.
The black and white outfit continued to press but wasted several opportunities, with Fabrice Mopina failing to convert a goalmouth scramble before halftime.
Sisonkhe returned with renewed determination in the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when defender Mpendulo Mavuso rose highest to head home from a corner kick, leaving Bhekisisa Dlamini helpless.
Just ten minutes later, the underdogs struck again. Striker Thabiso Sithole capitalised on Highlanders’ defensive lapse to fire home from close range, sending the Sisonkhe into raptures.
Mwase responded with multiple substitutions, introducing Mpilonhle ‘Loshy’ Khumalo, Majaha ‘Giggs’ Ndlovu, and Siwakhile Shongwe to try and salvage the match. However, clear-cut chances remained hard to come by.
With time running out, Sisonkhe almost sealed the game with a third goal, but Linda Dlamini’s strike rattled the post. On the other end, Highlanders’ Kenneth Moloto had a late chance to equalise, but his effort fell short.
In the end, Sisonkhe held on to secure maximum points, boosting their survival hopes while dealing a significant blow to Highlanders’ title chase.
