Social media users have reacted with shock and sorrow to the death of former Mhlume United player, Senzo Gondwe, remembering him for his heroic spirit in the face of immense adversity.
Gondwe, who passed away on Saturday, nearly 20 years after a life-altering car accident in 2005, is being hailed as an inspiration. The accident, which involved him as a passenger in a car driven by a friend to Manzini, resulted in extensive hospital visits and efforts to secure compensation for his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle lost control while attempting to avoid a head-on collision, causing Gondwe to suffer severe head and pelvic injuries and multiple internal organ damages. His injuries included a fractured pelvic bone and chronic pain, which he endured since the accident.
Despite these immense challenges, social media users are sharing stories of Gondwe's resilience and courage. He is being remembered as a very courageous man, who faced his hardships with strength and was able to laugh and smile, even while seeking justice.
His friend, Mandla "Checks" Mnguni Nxumalo, shared memories of Gondwe, describing him as a hero. Nxumalo revealed that Gondwe's strength and resilience were an inspiration to many, including those who had also experienced road traffic accidents. He also mentioned that Gondwe was contacted by many, including corporations, offering support and assistance.
Funeral details have been shared, including a memorial service at his family home in Sihhoye on Friday at 1 pm, a night vigil at the same location, and a funeral service at his father's home in Mshingishini, Northern Hhohho.
Nxumalo also highlighted that Gondwe had been battling health issues since the 2005 accident, facing daily struggles and stints with corporates due to his injuries. He also mentioned that Gondwe's family is accepting contributions from the public.
