BABY DIES, MOTHER RECOVERING FROM POISONING

By BONGUMUSA SIMELANE | 2024-10-18

A 16-month-old baby has died while her mother remains admitted in hospital after they both ate food that was allegedly laced with Masta900 at Ntsanjeni on Tuesday.

The child reportedly died shortly after eating the food, while the mother was rushed to Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital.

According to sources close to the matter, the woman’s lover who is the baby’s father is alleged to be behind the poisoning.

The Masta900 was allegedly put in the food before it was cooked. When the food was ready, the baby and her mother ate it while the man allegedly did not bother eating it for unknown reasons.

He was alleged to be among the people who raised the alarm after the incident.
There are claims that the couple had some issues. “The man has been accusing her of cheating with another man from Tebetebe.

We suspect the father of the baby because we find it strange that the poisoning occurred as the cheating rumours are rife in the area,” a source said adding that the couple and their baby had been allegedly staying in their dagga field at Ntsanjeni.

Adding, the sources disclosed that the man had a male employee reportedly working in the dagga fields.

The two were lately said to be clashing after the man failed to pay him his dues. “The labourer had told us that he was being owed by his employer money for cultivating the dagga fields.
He has been asking for his payment and they ended up fighting,”  claimed the source.

The source alleged that the poisoning seemed to be a trick which was orchestrated so that it would be seen as though it was the employee who poisoned the two.

It was alleged that the employee had informed some residents that his employer was threatening him for demanding his payment.

“The man went to the extent of threatening him with a bushknife.
The employee was also suspected to have been the one who poisoned the food.

However, some community members said a lot was going on between the couple, which  convinced them that it was the woman’s lover who poisoned them,” a source claimed.

The woman’s lover and the employee were taken by the Mliba police for questioning. They were later released while investigations continue.

The woman who is said to be from Shewula is still recovering.
However, some community members claim that the the place where the couple reportedly grew dagga was no longer used for such after authorities stopped such an activity following escalating criminal activities.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the matter.
She added that no one has been arrested so far, but the police were still investigating the matter.
