‘MEN ALSO VICTIMS OF GBV’

By Siyabonga Nsibande | 2024-06-11

MISS Eswatini Shanice Mamba has been chosen as an advocate against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

She said although gender based violencewas a well-known problem that is primarily linked with men, it was true that boys and men were also victims of it.

She is also passionate about helping those less fortunate across the country.
Mamba has been charitable and has worked with the likes of the Helping Hand Foundation, Makholweni Care Point and Mental Haven charity organisation. She did express that she was eager to do more charity work.

“Gender-based violence is a well-known problem that is primarily committed by men, it is true that boys and men are also victims .

“It can be decreased by giving women and girls the tools they need to succeed economically. This is empowering them to stay in school, applying feminist strategies to address gender inequality even at home, creating safe spaces for them, having conversations with men, involving women in leadership roles, and supporting regional organisations that advocate for women's rights,” she explained.

When speaking on the standards of the beauty pageant industry in Eswatini, Mamba emphasised that it was important for local businesses and their clients to take the craft seriously and treat it professionally.

As someone who is passionate about modelling, Mamba used her partnership with Pick n Pay Clothing as an example of some of the opportunities that were needed for local models. Providing aspiring models with the chance to work with credible brands and companies empowers the industry and the people involved in the sector, she explained.

Mamba said she intended to finish her reign having left a strong impact on the industry going forward.

“I am committed to my role as Miss Eswatini. I would love to see the industry grow, and real work opportunities become available for the Eswatini community. It would also be great to participate in international pageants and showcase our people at global stages. Hopefully, I will be able to influence young people, even after my reign is complete,” she stated.

Having been Miss Eswatini for the last few months, Mamba shared some of the character traits she believes a queen should have when she assumed the role of Miss Eswatini. She spoke on her experience as Miss Eswatini since taking over as queen.

“It has been a unique experience for me. There is a lot of pressure that comes with being Miss Eswatini, but I remain humble and grateful for the opportunity and responsibility.

“A queen is more than just a distinguished figure on specific days. In addition to demonstrating her brilliance, talent and pleasant personality as the victor, she supports social service.

“She needs to gain self-assurance, establish opportunities and professional skills, and establish an environment for women to speak out on significant topics. She should participate in national cultural activities as well,” Mamba shared.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to be the country’s brand ambassador as Miss Eswatini. It is a huge responsibility and a perfect example of a leader to the young girls hoping to join pageantry in Eswatini,” she added.

The title of Miss Eswatini was assumed by First Princess, Shanice Mamba. This is due to the reason that Tania Nunn, the former reigning Miss Eswatini, relocated to pursue her studies in Europe.

Fezile Mthupha assumes the role of First Princess as a result of all these changes.
It is worth mentioning that Oukitel Eswatini has partnered with the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture to be the new directors of the Miss Eswatini Pageant going forward.
