VOTER REGISTRATION HOURS EXTENDED

By THEMBEKA DLAMINI | 2018-06-17

The overwhelming response by voters saw the need for hours to be extended in three voter registration centres this weekend.

Today marks the last day of registration for voters who will take part in the 2018 general elections to be held in September.

Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) Communications Officer Mbonisi Bhembe revealed that three stations; namely Pigg’s Peak DC, Mbabane Mall as well as Swazi Plaza started closing late recently and would continue to do so today.

Stating reasons behind extending hours, Bhembe said they had noted that by 5pm, which is the usual closing time at other stations, there remained long lines of people still in need of registering.

He said they were satisfied with the response as it showed willingness to participate in electing leaders.

When asked about the total number of people eligible to vote, he said according to the Central Statistics, 600 000 had reached the age of majority and were eligible to partake in elections as voters.

He stated that they were on track in registering most of them as by the end of yesterday, over 590 000 voters were registered.
