SIHLANGU UPSET THE ODDS

By JONGILE XUBA | 2025-03-21

SOCCER - IN a match where few gave them a chance, Sihlangu Semnikati exceeded expectations by holding African giants Cameroon to a goalless draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier on Wednesday evening at Mbombela Stadium.

Heading into the clash, Eswatini’s senior national team was widely expected to struggle, having lost their previous four matches and sitting at the bottom of Group D. Meanwhile, Cameroon arrived as overwhelming favourites, boasting a squad filled with European-based stars and having already scored nine goals in the qualifiers.

Many football fans and pundits predicted a heavy defeat for Eswatini, with some even betting on a goal fest in favour of the Indomitable Lions. However, Zdravko Logaruši?’s charges displayed remarkable resilience, defying all predictions to secure an impressive point.

Prior to kick-off, expectations were overwhelmingly negative, with fans bracing for a tough night. Betting slips reflected this sentiment, with one fan confidently wagering on a 7+ goal win for Cameroon. However, Sihlangu had other plans.

With a disciplined defensive approach and unwavering determination, Eswatini frustrated their high-profile opponents, proving that they could compete with some of Africa’s best. Even the handful of optimistic fans who predicted an upset were left stunned by Sihlangu's ability to hold their ground.

Social media buzzed with reactions as fans processed the unexpected outcome. While many betting slips turned red, there was widespread admiration for Eswatini’s performance:

User 1:
"I am going to predict 7+ because we are hungry and the situation is bad. I have bet E120 and will get a payout of E16k."
User 2:
"I think the final result will be Eswatini 4 – 1."
User 3:
"A lot of tickets are red, but great effort from Sihlangu."
User 4:
"I almost made a blunder and bet E1k on Cameroon."
User 5:
"This looked like a straight win even if it was your first time betting."
User 6:
“We have no chance against Cameroon, they will beat us 5-0.”
User 7:
“Sihlangu will definitely lose this match.”
User 8:
“ I do not see Sihlangu winning this match. We cannot match Cameroon.”
