After being re-elected unopposed as CAF president last Wednesday, Dr Patrice Motsepe has pleaded with the leadership of African nations to invest in football infrastructure.
Motsepe, who has been hailed by many for bringing stability in the organisation, said infrastructure was one of the biggest problems on the continent as most countries cannot host international matches at home. This as most stadiums do not meet the required standards set by FIFA and CAF.
This week Eswatini will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Cameroon and Mauritius away at Mbombela Stadium, SA.
Motsepe said though African countries have other issues to deal with, he believed investing in the sport had financial benefits.
“Many heads of state I meet tell me that they have little funds and what is worse is that their economies have experienced periods of difficulty and whatever money they have is for paying loans. They say should we take the money to build a stadium or hospital or put in education? One of the things we are doing as African football is to present a case and convince the heads of state to understand that investing in stadiums, spending money on football development and football infrastructure is enormously beneficial for the economic development of Africa,” he said.
Motsepe said developing infrastructure would help improve the game on the continent to compete against the best in the world.
The mining magnate also noted that in Africa they have two groups of development, those competing against the best in the world and the second group, being the nations where there is love for football but lack of support from governments due to limited budgets.
