127 ABUSE CASES REPORTED IN FEBRUARY

Despite being the month of love, February saw a disturbing 127 cases of abuse reported in Eswatini, according to the Swatini Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA).

The number of reported cases decreased in comparison to February of the previous year where 227 cases where reported.

A significant gender gap was observed, with 92 cases involving female survivors and 35 involving male survivors.

Emotional abuse accounted for the majority (60 per cent) of reported cases, totaling 76 incidents.

Sexual abuse (16 cases), financial abuse (11 cases), physical abuse (6 cases), and neglect (7 cases) were also reported.

The Manzini region reported the highest number of gender-based violence (GBV) cases, followed by the Hhohho region.

The largest segment of survivors were adults aged 25 and above, accounting for 60 per cent. However, significant numbers were also seen in the 10-14 and 15-17 age groups.

SWAGAA Executive Director Nonhlanhla Dlamini emphasized the need for continued efforts to protect and educate people about abuse.

The organisation provided comprehensive psychosocial support to survivors, including counseling, case management, and referrals.
