EEZYPODS REVOLUTIONIZES SUSTAINABLE LIVING WITH INNOVATIVE, MOVABLE HOUSING SOLUTIONS

By Nomfanelo Maziya | 2025-03-13

As the global demand for eco-friendly and adaptable housing increases, EezyPods, a pioneering local business, has launched a state-of-the-art workshop in Dwaleni, showcasing its revolutionary "pod" housing solutions.

Founded by Joe Roques, EezyPods is bringing innovative and stylish sustainable living to Eswatini, offering a unique alternative to traditional construction.
The Dwaleni workshop serves as the central hub for the construction of these unique pods.

Unlike traditional container homes, EezyPods are built indoors and then air-lifted from the top, enabling helicopter transportation and placement in even the most remote locations.
This innovative approach, protected by a recently approved South African patent, sets EezyPods apart.

"We are not working with containers," explains Roques. "Our pods are made from steel, have larger dimensions and are designed with sustainability at their core."
Each pod is equipped with rainwater harvesting systems and can be fitted with solar panels, allowing residents to live off-grid and minimize their environmental impact.

EezyPods prioritises local sourcing, utilizing raw materials from within the country.
Customization is a key feature, with options ranging from color schemes and air conditioning to compact waste systems, septic tanks, and varying sizes.

The design process, including detailed drawings, is incorporated into the overall cost.
Turnaround time for customized pods is estimated at four to five months, depending on floor space and order volume.
Pre-made pods offer a quicker solution, as dimensions are already established.

"Constructing indoors eliminates weather-related delays, ensuring consistent progress regardless of rain or shine," Roques said.
The popularity of EezyPods stems from their affordability and sustainability, addressing the rising cost of living and the desire for eco-conscious lifestyles, according to the founder.
Compared to traditional brick houses, pods are stronger, lighter, faster to build, and more cost-effective.

"Our pods eliminate the risk of water buildup and foundation damage, issues commonly faced in Eswatini's seasonal climate," Roques emphasizes.
For example, a one-bedroom EezyPod costs approximately E420 000, which is less than the estimated E800 000 for a comparable brick house.

A Perculliar People’s Melusi ‘Zox’ Dlamini, a strong advocate for local brands, believes EezyPods represent the future of residential construction.
"This is what we should be developing. It's a plug-and-play solution. You can buy it on Monday and move in on Frida,” said Dlamini.

He acknowledged that financing may pose a challenge, questioning the readiness of banks to support this innovative approach, however Roques mentioned during his presentation that he was in talks with banks as well as insurance companies who were receptive.
Co-Founder and CEO of Black Mamba Foods Claudia Castellanos praised EezyPods as an "incredible new concept" that offers affordability, sustainability, and flexibility.

"We are very lucky to have this concept in the country," she notes, highlighting its potential to address the housing needs of younger generations.
"I'm thinking, in particular, of younger people trying to get their first home. It's so difficult these days, and pods offer that possibility. You get the possibility to build on national land where you can have incredible views that you couldn't have before. It’s a beautiful concept for the younger generation to embrace," she said.

With a six per cent annual growth rate, the global tiny homes market has been valued at approximately USD$21.93 billion in 2024, and is expected to reach 29.88 billion by 2033.
The market in Africa is emerging, with expectations for it to reach USD$88.24 billion by 2029.
