Maxwell Dlamini, Deputy Secretary General of the People's United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO), has announced he is taking a leave of absence from his position, following public statements he made regarding the Tinkhundla electoral system, which sparked a heated debate within the organization and the broader mass democratic movement (MDM).
Dlamini's pronouncements ignited discussions about PUDEMO and the MDM's potential participation in Eswatini's elections.
This led to significant criticism, with some calling for his resignation, asserting that his views no longer aligned with PUDEMO's official stance.
The online debate saw Dlamini express his belief in freedom of expression and the importance of open dialogue, stating that those who call for resignations based solely on differing viewpoints are detrimental to progressive and democratic principles.
"Democracy is built on the ability to debate, disagree, and engage with different views, not to silence those who think differently," Dlamini remarked in an online statement.
As the debate intensified, Dlamini released a formal statement addressed to PUDEMO's Secretary General.
In it, he announced his decision to take a leave of absence, citing the recent events on social media and the subsequent considerations as influencing his decision.
Despite stepping away from his official role for the time being,Dlamini reaffirmed his commitment to PUDEMO’s core objectives.
Following the announcement, Dlamini received massive support from some members of PUDEMO and those in the political space, with some of the view that it was a well-calculated move when considering the prevailing situation.
