MECK MWASE LINKED WITH BULL RETURN

By JONGILE XUBA | 2025-01-31

SOCCER - FORMER Malawi national team coach Meck Mwase is reportedly in line for a return to Mbabane Highlanders as the club prepares for significant leadership changes.

Mwase, who previously coached Nsingizini Hotspurs, is considered the front-runner for the head coach position at the capital city giants. His return is closely linked to the expected comeback of former managing director Bheki ‘Rubber’ Simelane, who is reportedly finalising a deal to replace outgoing South African businessman Chief Ally Kgomongwe.

The SA businessman recently distanced himself from the team following tensions with the National Supporters Committee.

Mwase is no stranger to Highlanders, having worked with Simelane between 2015 and 2017. He also led Malawi to the last 16 in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), showcasing his credentials on the international stage.

A source within the Highlanders camp hinted that Mwase's return could be imminent, stating that negotiations would begin once Simelane’s contract with the patrons is finalised.

“Mwase is a favourite to take over the head coach position, and discussions will start soon after the incoming MD signs his contract.

He is an experienced coach who can change the team’s fortunes and steer it out of the relegation zone,” the source revealed.

Mbabane Highlanders Patrons Chairman Thembinkosi Mamba said nothing had reached his office at the moment; however, there was a team that had been tasked with handling issues concerning the team.

"I am currently waiting for the team we had tasked with running and improving the team to report back to us. At the moment nothing has reached my office," he said. Mwase could not be reached for comment at the time of compiling the article.

Mbabane Highlanders, currently under the guidance of coach Thembela Dlamini, will take on Royal Leopard in their next MTN Premier League fixture on Saturday at Mkhuzweni Technical Centre.

The ‘Black Bull’ will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing exit from the SMVAF Ingwenyama Cup, where they were knocked out in the last 32 by National First Division side Lozitha Spurs.

As the club navigates through changes both on and off the pitch, all eyes will be on the potential return of Mwase and the impact he could have on the team’s  future.
