ECONOMIST HOPES KING WILL ADDRESS CORRUPTION, UNEMPLOYMENT

By NOKUNCEDA MAGAGULA | 2025-01-31

As the Second Session of Parliament will be officially opened tomorrow by His Majesty King Mswati III, there are high hopes that he will address critical issues facing the nation.

Economist Sanele Sibiya expressed a strong desire for the king to tackle topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), unemployment, corruption and other pressing matters that are pivotal to the country's development.

Sibiya emphasised the importance of Artificial Intelligence in shaping the future of the economy, urging the king to make it a focal point in his speech.

"I would like the king to give a directive on AI because that is where the economy is going, It would be quite impressive if that would come from the throne,” he said.

The economist highlighted how AI had the potential to drive economic growth and innovation, calling for the nation to position itself to take advantage of this global shift. Sibiya noted that unemployment remained a significant issue in Eswatini, and hopes His Majesty would provide guidance on how Emaswati could address this challenge.

"The other thing I would like the king to address is the issue of unemployment. It would be good if he could equip Emaswati on how they can deal with that issue," he said.

Sibiya also pointed to the persistent skills mismatch in the workforce, which he believes is hindering economic progress.

"If the king could give a directive on how we  can handle the skills mismatch, it could help us grow the economy while accounting for the lost generation," he stated.

Corruption was another critical issue raised by Sibiya, who criticised the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for its lack of tangible results.

"The ACC has existed for over 13 years, but corruption continues with impunity because we know it just does not bite," Sibiya said. He made an example of the mishandled drugs worth E2 million, for which no one has been held accountable.

"You can imagine how much we are losing, which is money the economy desperately needs," he stressed.

Sibiya called for stronger measures to ensure accountability and prosecution of corrupt individuals.

Sibiya also  expressed concerns about drug-related issues and the functionality of universities in the country.

He said he hoped that the king would touch on these topics, as they were vital for the well-being of the nation and development of its human capital.
