SOCCER - PREMIER League of Eswatini (PLE) acting CEO Petros ‘Pat’ Vilakati has made an earnest appeal to soccer fans to actively support their clubs financially and refrain from actions that could jeopardise their teams’ reputation and stability.
Speaking during the VOC ‘Sports Show’ yesterday morning, Vilakati expressed concern over the unruly incidents that disrupted matches during the past weekend. He urged supporters to embrace match results with maturity and to avoid violence, which has become a troubling trend in recent fixtures.
Vilakati highlighted the significant financial challenges clubs faced, urging fans to play their part in alleviating the burden. “We are aware of the financial difficulties confronting teams, and this is where fans need to step in and assist.
If you can’t contribute to the team’s preparations, you cannot expect stellar results, as you have little understanding of the obstacles they endure,” he said.
The acting CEO emphasised the detrimental effects of violent behaviour, which often leads to hefty fines that exacerbate the financial strain on clubs. “Fans must understand that actions leading to fines hurt their teams directly. It’s time for supporters to show responsibility and back their clubs in constructive ways,” he added.
Vilakati also took the opportunity to commend the efforts of law enforcement and emergency medical services (EMS) during the first half of the season.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the police and EMS teams for their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of our league matches. Additionally, we applaud the Green Mamba fans and team doctors for their swift intervention in aiding the injured Mbabane Highlanders player last weekend. Their prompt response was crucial,” he said.
Vilakati’s remarks underscore the vital role fans play in creating a safe, supportive, and financially viable environment for football in Eswatini.
