MINISTRY DISTANCES ITSELF FROM SINKING EKUDZENI HIGH

By MELISA MSWELI | 2025-01-10

WHILE residents of Ekudzeni are concerned that a new school in the vicinity is sinking, it looks like they have a bigger problem as the ministry of education and training has distanced itself from it.

This is a newly-built school referred to as Ekudzeni High by the community members. The school, which currently has two blocks, was built by a Korean national who stays at Ekudzeni under Manzini region.

The residents were concerned that the school was built in a wetland. They said with the heavy rains being experienced these days, it was going to take over three months for the place to dry up.

They are worried that the academic year is due to start in a few weeks time and by they will still have a challenge of sending their children to far away schools. It was gathered that the land where the shool was built was allocated by the chiefdom after community members raised concerns that their children travelled long distances to school.

“Individuals were hired to build the school,” said one community member.
The community members are worried that the school will  not open this year.
Ministry of Education and Training acting Principal Secretary Naniki Mnisi said they had not been appraised about the school.

She said the Land Management Board was not aware of a school commissioned in the area.  Mnisi said for a school to exist and be ready to operate, it needed to have an administration block and offices, adding that it should also be known to the ministry.

“We do not know that school,” she said.
Efforts to get a comment from the Korean national proved futile as his cell was not available on the network.
