LANDERS DODGE A BULLET

By Melusi Mlotsa | 2025-01-04

SOCCER – Capital city football giants Mbabane Highlanders have ushered in a new era by appointing Thembela Dlamini, a CAF Licence A holder, as their head coach.

Dlamini, who has an extensive track record in Eswatini football, replaces Mthunzi Ginindza who recently joined Botswana's Extension Gunners following internal disputes within the club.

Sources close to the club confirmed that negotiations with Dlamini were finalised yesterday afternoon. His appointment comes at a critical time as Highlanders, commonly known as the Black Bull face a potential points deduction for playing three matches without a qualified technical personnel.

Dlamini is set to take charge immediately and will be on the sidelines when Highlanders clash with Green Mamba this afternoon at Mhlume Stadium. Assisting him will be club legends Sifiso ‘Barnes’ Mkhulisi and Sipho ‘Shilton’ Dube, as the team seeks to recover from a turbulent start to the season.

“It’s a done deal. Thembela will be with Highlanders for the rest of the season. But you can contact the chairman for confirmation,” a source revealed.

When reached for comment, Highlanders' Management Committee Chairman Mbongeni Khumalo neither confirmed nor denied the news. However, he acknowledged Dlamini's experience and the value he could bring to the team.

“We all know that Thembela is an experienced coach. Having him in our camp can be a bonus to us. The CEO's office is handling that deal. We also want to abide by PLE laws,” Khumalo stated.
Dlamini's credentials speak volumes in local football circles.

He has previously managed MTN National First Division (NFD) sides like Lozitha Spurs and CK Survivors, and has held roles with Illovo FC and Moneni Pirates in the MTN Premier League.

While he is yet to win a domestic title, his years of experience and tactical knowledge are expected to be pivotal as Highlanders look to climb the log standings.
Speaking about his new role, Dlamini expressed optimism and determination.

“I was contacted by the side, and they came to meet me and we were able to come to an agreement which I signed today (yesterday). This is a huge step up for me, and I believe I will be able to help the team achieve it’s target for the rest of the season,” he said.

Highlanders currently sit in a precarious position with 10 points on the log. The team will close out the first round of the league next week with a match against Ezulwini United.
Dlamini's immediate focus will be to stabilise the team and begin their ascent back to the top of Eswatini football.

With his appointment now confirmed, all eyes will be on Mhlume Stadium as Dlamini takes charge for his first match as the leader of the Black Bull. Fans are hopeful that his arrival will inject fresh energy into the team and help them turn their season around.
