By SIYABONGA NSIBANDE | 2024-10-22

THE Eswatini Clothing Brand Awards (ECBA) saw multiple fashion brands and models walk away with prizes for their work in the fashion and entrepreneurship industry.

The ceremony took place at Bethel Court in Ezulwini on Saturday night.
Brands which walked away with the most awards were Creatures of Habit (COH) by Samkelo Dlamini and Teddz Urban by Mxolisi Baras.

Dlamini appreciated the recognition from the awards for a second year running.  He said last year he won eight awards in all the categories his brand was nominated in, while this year, he won four out of the five categories COH was nominated for.

Dlamini shared that he was happy to return to the awards where his brand won a number of prizes  again.

He thanked the executive director of EBCA for their constant work, with following and creating acknowledgment of various entrepreneurs in the fashion industry.

“Creatures of Habit was inspired by my background and beliefs. Being a Christian brand, I felt the name was perfect as I wanted people to wear my designs freely, proudly and comfortably knowing that the brand was built on faith and the belief in Christianity.

“Our wins today show that we have stuck to our beliefs and have been able to provide people with locally crafted clothing. We are happy to win. I am proud that people take our work seriously and we are grateful,” the brand owner said.

He added that he was thankful to judge Hleza, who was also a huge winner in previous editions of ECBA, while also recognising his influence on the COH brand through mentorship and constant support.

Hleza said he was proud of Dlamini and his team for working hard and remaining consistent in the fashion industry, encouraging COH and all brand to continue working hard.

Founder and Director of Teddz Urban Baras said he was  grateful to be acknowledged by the awards.

He explained his brand had been established over ten years ago, and they were always looking to create innovative and fresh designs, standing out in the industry.

He also said he had featured in international competitions, and the awards would help attract more deals, and opportunities to take his brand global.

“It is amazing to be recognised after working in the industry for over a decade. We have always wanted and felt we are different and hardworking and award shows like these validate those efforts. We want to be big and different,” Baras explained.

He further thanked his family for their support, and announced that Teddz Urban was currently working on opening their official store next year.

The award ceremony was conducted by three judges Bonnie Makhanya, Hleza and Nomphilo Dlamini.

It was hosted by Voice Of the Church (VOC) 2 FM radio presenter Laury G.
Top Models Eswatini members Sethu Shongwe and Tandzile Ndlangamandla walked away with

‘Best Model of the Year’, making their director Mbalenhle Manana proud.

Manana provided models to display various brands during the ceremony as well.
Former Mr Eswatini, model and judge Bonnie Makhanya said he felt the awards were proof that the fashion industry was growing, adding that he felt it was a viable profession as the establishment of clothing brand and modeling agencies was growing in the country.

“It is encouraging to see a room filled with creative’s who share a passion for fashion, and modeling. With the increase in agencies and brands, it would be great to see more institutions which could provide information, tips and tricks on how to grow and build as a model and fashion designer in the industry.
