SOCCER - THERE might be a huge relief for football lovers at home, as the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and Eswatini Television Authority (ESTA) are on the verge of having live broadcasts for elite league games.
Beginning from this weekend, the public broadcaster will show a live game between Mbabane Highlanders and Sisonkhe on at King Sobhuza II Stadium on Sunday together with two other games as a pilot project.
After the pilot project, the two parties will then determine if it is viable to proceed with showing the live games. PLE Executive Member Sibusiso ‘Scorpion' Nxumalo said this during a media briefing held at Sigwaca House yesterday. “This is a pilot project, and as PLE we will give Eswatini TV three games to see if they can give us what we want, and if we agree with them we will take it from there,” he said. Nxumalo said their main aim was to market players and make sure they attracted sponsors so that they could come on-board and support football. Teams will also benefit from the partnership. Meanwhile, PLE Executive member Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane said with the project, they wanted teams to be financially responsible so that they could reap the benefits.
He said the project would help local players to be marketable, giving them an opportunity to play outside the country. “We believe that with this project, there will be many things to be corrected in our football and we hope sponsors will come on-board to support football,” he said.
