POLICE MAKING PROGESS IN FULFILLING ‘NKWE’ CONCEPT

By Crime Watch | 2024-05-11

The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has made significant inroads in achieving the set standard of service delivery which is guided by the famous ‘Nkwe’ concept.

‘Sitsi Nkwe’ is a Siswati idiom denoting speed and was pronounced by His Majesty during the National Sibaya, where he stressed the need to induce speed into the country’s public service delivery mechanisms.

In line with this pronouncement, the police service adopted the theme ‘Accelerated Speed (Sitawutsi Nkwe) In the Fight Against all Forms of Crime and Road Carnage’ to guide all operations and set the standard of professionalism.

In its endeavour of ensuring that the required standard of operation is attained, REPS employed a multi-faceted approach which includes bringing policing services closer to the people.

The belief is that implementing the ‘Nkwe’ concept becomes practical and achievable once police service centres are within the vicinity of communities.

Accordingly, the Royal Eswatini Police Service has established three new posts at Ngwane Park, Luhlendlweni and Lonhlupheko since the turn of the year. Worth noting is that the Lonhlupheko Post, which was christened Langa Gateway, operates 24 hours.

Furthermore, the police service has also been able to fix and resume operations in four posts that were damaged during the infamous social unrest, which left a trail of destruction on infrastructure.

These posts are Debedebe, Ngudzeni, Mahlalini and Luve.
REPS has also been allocated a piece of land measuring over two hectares for construction of another post at Lushikishini.

The Ngwane Park Post which comprises of a service centre, an interviewing room and a holding cell was officially handed over last week Tuesday courtesy of OK Foods.

Speaking during the event, Senior Superintendent Charles Simelane said REPS cannot effectively deliver on its mandate without the goodwill and support of the nation. Simelane who was representing the acting national commissioner of police, expressed gratitude towards OK Foods for its role in bringing policing services to Ngwane Park community and further urged other businesses to follow suit.

Simelane revealed that police were in the communities to provide excellent service and assist members of the public in the quickest manner possible.

He challenged all police officers to brace up in order to be able to deliver on the service delivery blueprint which is ‘Nkwe’.

OK Foods Director - Lincoln Motsa noted that the strategic location of the post will increase police visibility thus ensuring the safety of customers and the Ngwane Park community.

He said his company invested in the structure worth around E450 000 in order to enhance safety, reduce crime and facilitate access to essential police services such as police reports and document certification.

Ideally, the police service would prefer to have satellite posts scattered all over the country for swift and effective policing.
However, there are various determining factors that qualify the establishment of a police post including population, crime rate and human capital.
