LAST THROW OF THE DICE

By MELUSI MLOTSA | 2024-05-23

SOCCER - 'THE last throw of the dice' often refers to someone's last chance to do something to survive a very dangerous situation, and this might be the case with hub giants Manzini Wanderers.

The angle and evidence dangled by Weslians in the alleged default rigmarole that links Denver Sundowns player Jimoh Moses could be mistaken for the soldiers who fought in the Gulf war in the early to mid-1990s.

The Weslians are armed with all the evidence they think will help them win their protest against Sundowns.

Moses is at the centre of controversy alongside goalkeeper Bernard Ayikwei, whom Wanderers alleged did not have work permits.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the skipper, Moses, applied for a work permit renewal in September 2023, which he allegedly didn’t collect until Monday from the ministry of home affairs.

Manzini Wanderers lodged the protest against Sundowns foreign pair during the deciding league game at Somhlolo National Stadium on Sunday. Wanderers lost the match 2-4 which means they will be relegated to the National First Division as they are at the bottom of the log table.

Wanderers have paid, confirmed and submitted all the necessary documents with the Premier League of Eswatini as a sign of continuing with the protest.

Wanderers Legal Advisor and Board of Governor Bongani ‘Bhanyaza’ Mdluli confirmed about the submission of the protest requirements.

“We confirmed the protest within the 48 hours stipulated time. However, I won’t go any further, lest I equip the defendant,” he said

Sundowns Chief Executive Officer Elvis Dube politely asked not to comment about the issue at this juncture.

“If they confirmed the protest, it is okay. we will not say anything for now until we do so in the right forums,” he said.

The matter is expected to be heard before the Premier League of Eswatini Disciplinary Committee soon.

Should Wanderers win the protest, they will escape relegation and Moneni Pirates will get the chop.

Meanwhile, Wanderers have been in a downward spiral as they finished at the bottom of the log standings with 21 points from 26 games.
