SOCCER – GREEN Mamba star Mthunzi ‘Xavi’ Mkhontfo’s excellent run in the league has earned him the October MTN Premier League best player award.
The Sihlangu player was handed a E6 000 cheque by MTN Brand and Sponsorship Manager Meshack Maseko during a presentation held at the Sigwaca House yesterday morning.
Also winning the monthly individual prize was Milling Hotspurs striker Lungelo Nyoni from MTN National First Division, who went home E2 000 richer.
When making his remarks, Mkhontfo dedicated his award to the entire Green Mamba family.
“I would like to thank the sponsor and the Premier League of Eswatini for coming up with this initiative. I also thank my coaches and teammates for supporting me since I joined the team and I will continue working towards the betterment of the club,” he said.
Remaining
When quizzed about his team’s prospects of winning the MTN Premier League E350 000 first round incentive, the ex-Royal Leopard player said they would fight until the end of remaining matches.
“We have not lost focus despite losing our two matches. We will work hard until the end of the first round and beyond us. I am appealing to our supporters to rally behind. We will do our best to make them happy,” he said.
Meanwhile, MTN Brand and Sponsorship Manager Meshack Maseko congratulated the two players for their achievements.
Improved
“We would like to commend the two players for their hard work as they have improved their chances of winning the player of the year award. Our main aim is to motivate the players so that they can improve their performances, something that also helps to bring more supporters to watch local matches.”
Award
Mkhontfo is the second Green Mamba player to win the award in a space of a month after his fellow striker Musa Dlamini won the same award last month. Hlathikhulu Tycoons player Sifiso Maziya is the previous winner of the same award under National First Division.
