MINISTRY, EFA TO MEET OVER WANDERERS DEBACLE

By NOMALUNGELO PHIRI | 2024-11-22

SOCCER - THE missing piece in the puzzle is set to take action!
This comes after the ministry of sports, culture and youth affairs has scheduled a meeting with the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) as means to discuss the debacle that has led to Manzini Wanderers becoming dormant.

Minister Bongani Nzima said the meeting would take place next week Thursday. He was responding to Senate Sports Portfolio Committee Chairman Celumusa Mndvoti, who questioned the minister on what they had done regarding the issue of Wanderers.

“Kuyabhedza! There are a lot of issues surrounding Eswatini football, and this is so disappointing.

what is the ministry doing regarding the Wanderers issue,” asked Mndvoti.
Nzima responded by saying their  hands were tied as football was governed by the world football mother body, the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), which made it a bit difficult for them to intervene in such cases.

“We will have a meeting next Thursday and the Wanderers issue will be part of the discussions.
“This will be a briefing through the Sports Council on issues surrounding sports, and I can assure you that Wanderers issues will be part of the meetings itinerary.

This would be an internal meeting at the ministry’s boardroom,” said Nzima.
EFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu could not be drawn for comment at the time of compiling this report.

Wanderers have been engaged in a fierce battle against relegation, banking their hopes on a protest regarding Denver Sundowns skipper Jimoh Moses, whom they alleged was ineligible to play during their last MTN Premier League clash last season against the team on May 19.

The contentious issue has persisted for over five months and was currently pending at the High Court.

In a recent development, the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) appealed for a court ruling that could have reinstated Wanderers into the fixtures of the top-flight league. This ongoing legal saga has sidelined the club, as both the 2024/25 MTN Premier League and National First Division (NFD) leagues continue.
