SOCCER - THIS year’s SMVAF Ingwenyama Cup is set to write another historic chapter as the country’s biggest and richest football tournament expands to include a women’s competition for the first time in years.

The addition comes with a dedicated sponsorship of E100 000, showcasing a significant step forward for women’s football in Eswatini.

Announcing this groundbreaking development, Ingwenyama Cup Soccer Committee Chairman Dr Comfort Shongwe, expressed excitement about the inclusion of women in the prestigious tournament. “We will have a women’s competition as part of this year’s Ingwenyama Cup competition, to mark another great chapter in the tournament’s history,” he said.

He further explained that the decision was driven by the committee’s commitment to inclusivity and development in local football.

“With an increased package this year, we saw it fit to involve the ladies, and the competition is sponsored with a total of E100 000,” he added.

The women’s competition will exclusively feature teams from the elite league under the Eswatini Women’s Football Association (EWFA). This structure ensures that the country’s top female footballers will have a platform to showcase their talent while competing for the prestigious Ingwenyama Cup trophy.
