Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini yesterday left the country for the inauguration ceremony of the new Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko.
The PM left the country through the King Mswati III international airport. Dlamini will be representing the king at the ceremony.
The new Botswana president was elected last week.
The prime minister would later proceed to Baku, Azerbaijan, for the United Nations Climate change Conference (COP29). The 29th conference will take place from November 11 to 22.
The conference would be a key moment for countries to present their updated national climate action plans under the Paris agreement, which is due by early 2025.
This is in line with this year’s conference which would be held under the theme: ‘Investing in a livable planet for all’. Dlamini said he would be pushing for climate change to be addressed, until they were heard.
He said the first issue was that of developing countries like Eswatini contributing lesser emissions.
He said even on their fewer contributions, they were expected to make changes on the way that they operate.
“This affects the development of the countries and Eswatini is listening to what they are saying but we will not stop developing ourselves while many countries continue to pollute the air, because the discussions are still ongoing,” he said.
Dlamini added that another issue affecting the country was the persistent drought experienced in previous years and hailstones which were all influenced by climate change.
