(Eswatini progress with 4-0 aggregate score)
Soccer - Mission accomplished! Eswatini have advanced to the next stage of the African Nations Championships (CHAN) Qualifiers after securing a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate win over Zimbabwe.
Sihlangu Semnikati claimed a crucial 1-0 victory in the second leg at Mbombela Stadium yesterday where Junior Magagula delivered yet another decisive performance.
Coming into this fixture, the Warriors of Zimbabwe were determined to overturn the 3-0 deficit from the first leg, which took place in Francistown.
With hopes high, head coach Sunday Chidzambwa made significant changes, recalling Dynamos stars Emmanuel Jalai and Martin Mapisa to bring a much-needed experience to the squad. However, despite their efforts, the visitors fell short once again.
The match began with high intensity as Sihlangu created the first major chance within five minutes. Forward Sabelo 'Sikhali' Ndzinisa, a constant threat throughout, narrowly missed the target. Moments later, Fanelo 'Order' Mamba had an opportunity to put Eswatini ahead but fired wide.
Zimbabwe responded with their own offensive moves and nearly took the lead in the 15th minute. Obriel Chiranga's strike came agonisingly close, but the ball sailed just inches away from goal.
As the first half wound down, Sabelo 'Sikhali' Ndzinisa had a golden opportunity, only for his shot to be dramatically cleared off the line. The opening 45 minutes ended with the sides deadlocked at nil-all.
The second half saw both teams continue to battle intensely, but it was Sihlangu who created the more dangerous chances. Zdravko Logaruši?’s men showed great composure and discipline, with their determination paying off in the 68th minute.
Royal Leopard’s Junior Magagula unleashed a stunning long-range effort from the center of the pitch, catching Zimbabwean goalkeeper Martin Mapisa off guard to give Eswatini the lead.
Following the goal, Eswatini expertly managed the game, keeping Zimbabwe at bay and ensuring there were no late comebacks. The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for Sihlangu, securing a 4-0 aggregate triumph and a well-deserved spot in the next round of the qualifiers.
Eswatini will now shift their focus to Madagascar, whom they are set to face in December. The nation will be eager to build on this momentum as they aim for a successful CHAN campaign.
The stage is now set for an exciting clash between Eswatini and Madagascar in the next round, and fans will be eagerly watching to see if Sihlangu can continue their impressive run.
