ANGRY MOB BURNS INDUMBA

By Kwanele Sibiya | 2024-10-16

Manzini AN angry mob comprising mostly residents of Mbikwakhe allegedly torched a consultation room (indumba) belonging to the mother of the man suspected of brutally killing two-year-old Sengeto Avethandwa Dlamini last Friday.

The sudden death of the child did not sit down well with the residents, thus they allegedly planned to ‘punish’ Sandile Davison Khumalo’s mother. Khumalo’s mother was widely known as Make Mthantazi. The torching reportedly occurred in the early hours of yesterday (around 3:30am) at Mbikwakhe situated under Kwaluseni Inkhundla. Anonymous sources claimed that the residents reacted this way because they suspected its owner of having a hand in the death of the toddler. they alleged that immediately after Sandile had reportedly stabbed the toddler at the neighbouring Zwane homestead, he carried her to his mother who was in the consultation room.

The sources claimed that the two spent sometime with the injured toddler inside the consultation room before Sandile came out carrying a bucket and the baby. Thereafter, they alleged that he filled the bucket with water, immersed the baby and sat on top of it, while shocked community members watched. The residents questioned why Make Mthantazi failed to raise the alarm when she saw her child (Sandile) entering her home, carrying a bleeding baby. As a result, on the day of the incident, she was also assaulted alongside Sandile. She reportedly fled the area and returned to her parental home as the residents were baying for her blood. When her consultation room was burnt, some residents allegedly stormed the Khumalo homestead, which remained unoccupied since Friday. “They arrived in the wee hours of Tuesday, they went straight for her indumba. “Some neighbours contacted the Eswatini National Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (ENFRES) personnel who came to put out the fire. However, when they arrived they discovered that most of the items in the consultation room had been reduced to ashes.

“They managed to save just a few items but were met with resistance from some community members who were already at the scene. The angry residents also threatened the fire personnel with violence, whilst advising them not to dare retrieve any item from the indumba.” Some of the residents said they did not want to see Make Mthantazi, setting her foot at Mbikwakhe. They claimed that if she defied them, they would deal with her accordingly. They alleged that they feared that if she returned to the area, more children would die. Efforts to obtain a comment from Make Mthantazi, proved futile as her cellphone was not available on the mobile network. ENFRES Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mandla Dlamini confirmed that firefighters attended to a fire incident at Mbikwakhe. He said the fire was caused by community members who torched a one-room house.

“We have gathered that the house which was burnt was used a consultation room,” he said. He said upon arrival, they discovered that even though the house was not damaged that much, the items inside were reduced to ashes. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer (PICO) Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the matter.
