SOCCER - DESPITE being out of competitive action for a majority of last year, Sitsebe Samhlekazi have managed to move up 17 spots in the latest FIFA rankings.
Eswatini had occupied 151st place for a majority of the last season due to the prolonged break on football caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
They recently moved up to 134th spot, which was a significant jump from the previous rank. This can be attributed to a number of factors, including their last performance at the COSAFA Women’s Championship in November last year.
They won one game and lost the rest of their group fixtures to be knocked out before the quarter-finals.
There were also 18 teams that were unranked due to prolonged inactivity, which also contributed to the improved ranking.
The next FIFA/Coca-Cola Women's World ranking will be published in two months’ time on March 26th.
Meanwhile, in the men’s rankings Sihlangu Semnikati are still unmoved from their previous rank of 153rd which they have held for the past six months.
This is far away from their best ever ranking of 88, which they achieved back in 2016 under the guidance of Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga.
