FIKI THE DRUMMER

This week‘s young and upcoming is Fikiswayinkhosi Nkambule who is popularly known as ‘Fiki’ among her peers. who is a drummer that has played for big groups like Joyous Celebration.

Fiki is a 22-year-old who went to Waterford where he studied IB. He says he had to find balance between school and his studies.

As if that was not enough he had to go to the United States of Americawhere he felt lost because his kind of music was not a common thing. Fiki attended Wartburg College loawa where he impressed with his unorthodox approach and landed himself in the Jazz band as a drummer and percussionist and that is how he landed himself a raid show where he would play his own material. That is how he found himself in this industry where he is has been able to be partly mentored by founder of Joyous celebration Lindelani Mkhize

The young lad says he discovered his passion for music at the age of three and by then his mother did not let him leave his talent to waste.

He played for a live audience when he was five at his church Life Christians.

When asked who he looks up to in the industry, the young drummer says the list is endless as he has so many people he looks up too and people that he draws attention.

“ I look up to so many people in the industry and draw inspiration from a lot of people, we have amazing artists doing a lot of great work out here,” says Fiki.

He mentioned artist like Jonathan Nelson, pianist Siyanqoba Mthethwa and Siphiwe ‘Magic hands’ Ngcobo.

The drummer says he hopes to achieve a lot in the next five years with his career he wants to fully expand his understanding of the arts and create something that compliments all of them in one space and achieve recognition.
