A young mother of two children is fighting for her life at the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital after she was hacked and left for dead by her Zionist husband when returning from church on Sunday.
Nokwanda Magagula (26) of Vusweni was hacked on the face multiple times and fell on the ground before she was pushed into a ditch and left for dead by her husband, Zweli Shongwe - (34) whilst they were on their way from church.
Shongwe is said to have proceeded home, thinking that his wife was dead, poisoned his two children Senkhosi(nine) and Mahle (seven) by making them to drink a poisonous insecticide.
He later drank the same insecticide, which also claimed his life.
This gruesome and heinous incident took place at the Shongwe homestead on the outskirts of Vusweni on Sunday evening.
It has been gathered that Shongwe first hacked Magagula while they were about 1km away from their homestead, leaving her to die by the roadside.
Police officers who wanted to remain anonymous, said the incident occurred when Shongwe and Magagula returned home from the Zionist church at Vusweni.
“Information we have suggests that Shongwe and Magagula were hitch-hiking from their church back to their homestead. Apparently, the couple got some transportation that left them about a kilometre away from their homestead.
During their walk back to the homestead, something happened that angered Shongwe to the point that he faced Magagula and literally hacked her face and head with a miniature bush-knife several times.
During the attack, Magagula fell on the ground and Shongwe kicked her into a ditch, leaving her to die by the roadside,” the officer revealed.
The police added that Shongwe arrived at his homestead and proceeded to force his children to drink the poison.
“Shongwe, who was a farmer, then forced both his children, Senkhosi and Mahle to drink the poison. Both children ingested the poison, resulting in the death of his daughter first. When Mahle succumbed to death Shongwe also ingested the same poison, dying a few minutes later. First to arrive at the scene was the children’s grandfather Edward Shongwe (71), who phoned the police as well as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to rush to the homestead,” they added.
When EMS arrived, they tried to rush the male child Senkhosi to the Mkhuzweni Health Centre facility but he lost his life while inside the ambulance next to his already dead sister. However, the EMS officers managed to rush Magagula, who was found bleeding inside the ditch, to the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital, where she is currently in critical condition.
At the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital, Magagula’s relatives who wanted to remain anonymous, said they suspected that Shongwe committed the murder after learning that his wife wanted to leave him tostay in Matsapha, where she is working.
The interview was cut short after Shongwe’s relatives told this reporter to vacate the hospital until further notice.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer (CPICO) Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the terrible incident.
At the time of compiling this report the mother Magagula was still hospitalised.
