SOCCER – MBABANE Highlanders midfielder dynamo Vusumuzi Zungu has reportedly gone AWOL in the team and might not be available for selection when the ‘Black Bull’ take on Royal Leopard in an MTN Premier League game tomorrow.
The player is heavily linked with one of the Manzini based teams and is alleged to have signed a pre-contract with the team.
Zungu was not part of the team’s friendly games against Manzini Sea Birds and was also conspicuously missing on Monday when the black and white outfit played against Rangers in a friendly match.
It has been reliably gathered that Zungu‘s contract with Highlanders is coming to an end in June.
Left
According to sources within the team, the South Africa-born import left the team about two weeks ago without informing his employers. “It’s true Zungu has been missing from the team’s activities as he left the country about two weeks ago. We were hoping he will come back before the resumption of the MTN Premier League.”
The source further said the team’s authorities were also seemingly growing impatient with the player since it was not the first time he disappeared in the team.
Misconduct
“They are ready to release the player because of his misconduct.”
Zungu is the highest paid player in the team, earning in the region of E12 000. The midfielder dynamo joined Highlanders from Matsapha United in the pre-season of 2018/19 with other players in the likes of Khanyakwezwe Shabalala, Sidumo Shongwe, Mthobisi Mngomezulu, Sabelo ‘Sawa’ Gamedze and Jimmoh Moses, among others.
Questions
Team coach Bongani Mhlongo referred all questions to the team’s PRO when asked about the player.
The team’s Public Relations Officer Paul ‘Magidzeludzakeni ‘Masilela confirmed that the player was missing in the team.
“We do not know where Zungu is and we can’t even reach him through his mobile phone. As a team we are in the dark about the player’s disappearance,” he said.
