KING TELLS UNESWA TO COMMERCIALISE

By Mhlengi Magongo | 2018-10-23

HIS Majesty King Mswati III and Chancellor of the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) has given a directive that the institution transform and commercialise some of its activities to reduce dependence on government.

This was revealed by Prince Phinda who is UNESWA’s Council Chairman at the Sports Emporium during the institution’s repackaged strategy launch which also includes the university’s new name.

The chairman revealed that council had a meeting where they reflected on the university’s vision and its role in providing guidance, support and direction. It was in this session where the council highlighted the key issues which UNESWA is grappling with.

“Given the directive by the Chancellor His Majesty the King Mswati III, we had to repackage our strategy so as to ensure that we can continuously measure progress, drive performance and reposition UNESWA as the University of Choice in Africa” he said.

The chairman gave an assurance that the name change from University of Swaziland (UNISWA) to University of Eswatini (UNESWA) had invigorated new energy and a sense of urgency to redirect, reposition and rebrand the institution so it returns to its former glory and beyond.

Key challenges facing UNESWA include:

n Dwindling government subvention due to the country’s fiscal challenges.

n The university admits only 40 per cent of qualifying students leaving a majority of Swazi students without access to tertiary education.

n There is a need for a higher sense of urgency in addressing issues affecting and impacting on UNESWA and the need to transform and compete in the region.
