PROFESSOR THWALA IS NEW UNESWA BOSS

By Sifiso Nhlabatsi | 2018-09-26

Following  the retirement of Professor Cisco Magagula the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) has since appointed a new Vice Chancellor to replace Magagula.

Yesterday UNESWA Registrar Dr Salebona Simelane officially made the announcement of the new Vice Chancellor Professor Justice Mandla Thwala.

Thwala was appointed together with Professor Pinkie Eunice Zwane who is going to occupy the newly formed position of Pro -Vice Chancellor.

Making the announcement during a press conference yesterday Dr Simelane said the council of  UNESWA is pleased to announce the introduction of the two appointees to its stakeholders.

He said the appointments are with effect from 20 September . Asked if the university is doing well financially for such new appointments considering that the position of Pro Vice Chancellor was a new one, the Registrar said the University was not doing well but economists have told them that in order to see progress they have to invest. The Registrar said as the university keeps growing, with a population of over 7 000 and the addition of new programmes there was a need to create the new position of Pro-Vice Chancellor.  The new Vice Chancellor in his remarks said as a institution they are striving to become the university of choice in Africa and they aim to do that through transformation and commercialisation. Professor Thwala said UNESWA is too dependent on government so now as an institution they will be looking at ways to raise money with the help of stakeholders.

Thwala said they will also try as a university to revise the programmes they have so that they can be in line with the current employment situation.
