Minister of Sports Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima says the construction of a new stadium projected to cost E6 billion will take approximately four to five years to complete.
This follows concerns raised by Senator Zabeni Shiba on the costs associated with the rehabilitation of Somhlolo Stadium and further questioned whether it would be more prudent to invest in a new stadium instead.
The senator raised this during the debate of the ministry of sports annual performance report for the financial year 2024/2025 and budget debate for the 2025/2026 financial year last week.
In response, Minister Nzima disclosed that since the inception of the rehabilitation efforts, E90 million has already been spent, with an additional request of E23 million for the 2025/26 budget period.
According to Minister Nzima, the ministry has initiated the process of estimating costs for the proposed 40,000-seater stadium. This ambitious project aims to enhance the region’s sporting infrastructure and is regarded as a long-term investment in the country’s sports culture.
Minister Nzima confirmed through Communications Officer in the Ministry, Phumaphi Msweli, that funding for the new stadium would be incorporated into the next budget.
The funding will be allocated in phases, similar to the approach taken during the rehabilitation of Somhlolo Stadium. Msweli emphasised that stakeholders can expect detailed plans and timelines following the upcoming budget approval.
The announcement of the anticipated construction of a new stadium marks a significant step forward for the ministry of sports, culture, and youth affairs in enhancing the country's sporting facilities.
