AN 80-year-old mkhulu who was arrested for the alleged murder of another man attempted to end his life by jumping off a speeding police car on Tuesday.
Henry Matatazela Nhleko was arrested together with Ntombifuthi Thwala (46) of KaMdabula for allegedly killing the latter’s brother whom it is said they threw his corpse in a pit latrine in November, 2023.
The two had allegedly tied Sifiso Thwala with ropes and left him hanging on a tree as a way of ‘punishment’ as he was always giving Ntombifuthi a hard time.
It is said he would physically assault his sister Ntombifuthi, hence the ‘punishment.’
It is said they later found him dead, so they resolved to secretly throw his corpse in the pit latrine.
However, two years down the line, after a misunderstanding between the two suspects, the man spilled the beans to the police on what exactly happened in 2023.
The remains of Sifiso were retrieved from the pit latrine and the two were eventually arrested and charged with murder.
On Tuesday, Nhleko was being driven in a twin cab vehicle by two police detectives who had taken him to get his medication from another hospital believed to be Hlatikulu Government and the plan was that he was to be taken to the Nhlangano Correctional Services where he had been remanded.
It is believed Nhleko had been taken to the Correctional Services facility but on arrival there, he hinted that he would need a refill of in his medication and that necessitated that he be taken back to the custody of the police as arrangements were made to get the medication he needed.
Having been able to get the medication he needed from the hospital, the police were planning to take Nhleko back to the Nhlangano Correctional when along the way he did the unthinkable. Two police detectives were on board the car when the old made the daring attempt.
“While they were near Mbangweni close to the army camp, he opened the door and threw himself out of the speeding car.
He rolled several times until he was blocked by a fence.
“The old man sustained injuries all over the body with the serious ones around the head. An ambulance from the Nhlangano Health Centre came from the Manzini direction, it stopped when finding people crowded where Nhleko was sprawling in agony.
“The ambulance then rushed him to Nhlangano Health Centre where he is fighting for his life,” claimed a source.
Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that Nhleko attempted to kill himself after jumping out of a police car.
“He tried to kill himself and had to be taken to hospital. He has since been discharged and is now at the Correctional Services where he was been remanded to,” said Vilakati.
