CONTROVERSY CLOUDS ACAESWA ELECTIONS

By DUDU DUBE | 2025-02-27

THE recent elections of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Association of Christian Artists in Eswatini (ACAESWA) have sparked controversy, with allegations of constitutional violations and questions about the eligibility of key elected members.

The elections, held this past Saturday in Manzini, have left some members of the Association deeply concerned about the legitimacy of the process.

One of the most contentious issues revolves around the re-election of Dr Mzwakhe Myeni as ACAESWA President.

Critics argue that Dr Myeni should not have been allowed to contest  the elections due to a 2019 inquiry report that allegedly found him guilty of misusing ACAESWA funds.

According to the association's constitution, individuals found guilty of such misconduct are ineligible to hold any leadership position. Despite this, Dr Myeni was permitted to run and ultimately secured the presidency.

Adding to the controversy is the election of Elijah Dubazane as Vice President. Members raised concerns about his eligibility, citing that he is a South African national.

The ACAESWA constitution reportedly restricts leadership positions to Eswatini artists, making Dubazane's election a potential violation of the association's constitution.

Another major point of contention is the alleged disregard for a constitutional clause requiring at least one member of the previous executive committee to be re-elected. This provision, designed to ensure continuity in leadership, was reportedly ignored during the election process, further fuelling concerns about the legitimacy of the outcome.

Sikelela Qwabe, the electoral officer, confirmed that two ACAESWA members have expressed their intention to file a formal petition challenging the results.

Qwabe stated, “two ACAESWA members called me following the elections. They informed me that they have intentions of submitting a petition against some of the elected NEC members.

We agreed that I'll receive such a petition and submit same to the Advisory Board for its consideration. I humbly decline to respond until all proper processes are followed and the matter dealt with accordingly.

The Advisory Board is expected to review the petition once it is formally submitted and take appropriate action.”

Dr. Myeni  also declined to comment on the allegations, stating that only the electoral officer and the Advisory Board were authorised to address the issue.
