THE Royal Eswatini Police Service has recorded 18 cases of fraudulent scams related to counterfeit R200 notes.

These cases have been reported in different places from October to December.
The money is said to be circulating mostly in the Manzini-Mbabane corridor.

REPS fraud investigator Inspector Goodness Dlamini said a person found with fake money in the country risked arrest with an option of E10 000 fine per note.

Dlamini said they as the police had discovered that there was a number of counterfeit notes in circulation, highlighting that they cannot specifically state whether it was mainly found in the urban or rural areas.

She said the money was discovered all over by businesses and individuals.

Dlamini said some of these people were getting it as change from retail outlets, advising the public to be vigilant when using money and try and differentiate from fake and original notes.

“It is criminal to manufacture, reproduce and distribute fake money. It is also criminal to imitate money and tear it,” she said.

Adding, Dlamini confirmed that there were 18 cases reported under the unit for now.

circulated
She said it was important for them as the police to warn the public since the money was being circulated at a high rate, especially now because it was the festive season.

Dlamini said the most counterfeited money was R200, but highlighted that the other South African rands were being discovered even though at a lower rate.

She said when the fake notes were confiscated, the police also discovered that the serial number was the same, which meant that the money was being manufactured in one place.

“We are still following up on the issue as the police and we would like to say the breeding source will be discovered soon and the people behind the scam will be apprehended,” she said.
