Fanele Bongiwe Methula (15) from St Michael's High School, the country’s top pupil in the Junior Certificate (JC) Examination, says she was inspired by Central Bank of Eswatini Governor Dr Phil Mnisi to achieve the outstanding results she obtained.
The crème de la crème, who hails from Nhlambeni, pointed out that she had no particular formula in as far as her secret to success was concerned apart from hard work and consistency.
She pointed out that her role model was her Maths teacher Mrs Mndzebele as well as Dr Mnisi.
She pointed out that Dr Mnisi greatly inspired her. She said what inspired her mostly about Dr Mnisi was that he was just an ordinary man who comes from a small rural village of Gege yet he has managed to make it big in life.
When asked how she prepared for the exams, Fanele said she did not study hard as she was the kind of person who easily gets bored.
She pointed out that she prepared study sessions of 40 minutes and would take 15 minute breaks in between the sessions.
She started studying early for the exams (about four weeks prior to their commencement).
She further stated that she also studied by doing a lot of teaching of concepts to the other learners in her school, especially when it came to Mathematics.
Fanele said her personal motto in life was ‘the sky is the limit.’
“I always try to exceed my expectations in life,” she said.
When asked how she managed to navigate the temptation and distraction of social media, she mentioned that she decided to sacrifice it at the beginning of the year.
She said towards the beginning of the exams she also decided to completely discard the cellphone.
When quizzed about what she aspires to become after completing her studies, she said for now she was still uncertain about the career path she would pursue. However, she pointed out that she had a lot of interest in aviation as she loves planes therefore she might become a pilot.
Methula said she also loves agriculture, however, she would not be pursuing it as a career.
She mentioned that she was expecting her parents to buy her a laptop as her mother promised her one before the commencement of the exams.
Methula mentioned that she obtained a merit in in Grade VII, but was disappointed by such results.
This, she said, was because she was hoping to be amongst the country’s top performing leaners during the Eswatini Primary Certificate (EPC).
“However, I vowed to come out tops in the JC results, hence this is a dream come true and a dramatic come back for me,” she said.
She mentioned that she was excited and ecstatic after being announced as the country’s top performing pupil in the JC examination.
“I am still trying to take it all in, it’s actually overwhelming, but this is an assurance for me that I am actually good and capable. This is something I never believed before, but now I do” she concluded.
