‘WE NEED A MIRACLE’

By MGCINI DUBE | 2024-05-07

SOCCER - FOLLOWING their 1-2 loss to Nsingizini Hotspurs which dented their title hopes, Green Mamba head coach Enerst Mavuso has admitted that only a miracle can see them defending their title.

Mavuso said this after his side suffered a first defeat against Shiselweni ambitious team Nsingizini Hotspurs at King Sobhuza II Stadium.

He said they needed to be at their best in the remaining two games and hope that Swallows drop points.

Green Mamba are second on the log table with 44 points, which means they would finish the season with 50 points should they win their remaining two games against Rangers and Mbabane Highlanders.

On the other hand, Mbabane Swallows need only two points from their two games against Ezulwini United and Young Buffaoes, who are also nursing   hopes of winning the league title. “We have to see how we approach the remaining two games. Of course, miracles do happen and we are hoping for one.

But I am being realistic; it will be difficult now to defend our title after losing to Nsingizini Hotspurs.”

He said they would fight until the end.

“Swallows won and with two games left, I do not think they will not pick up points anymore. This is a situation we find ourselves in and it is going to be tough.”

Mavuso seems to have thrown in the towel, and the team will now have to rely on other matches for them to have a chance, something that may prove to be a daunting task.

Mbabane Swallows coach Caleb Ngwenya said insisted that they would not be fooled by the five-point gap between them and second-placed Green Mamba and think they had won the league.

“We are now focusing on the next match where we want the three points. We won against Highlanders and have put that result behind us.”

He also said they would fight until the end.

“We are grounded and  are not naïve to believe that we have won the league.

There is still a long way to go and this fight will go down to the last minute of the season.

“I will have to make the boys believe that they can make it.”
