By SIFISO NHLABATSI | 2024-01-19

Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has left the country for Uganda and Italy to represent His Majesty King Mswati III at the 19th Non-Aligned Movement Summit of Heads of State and Government and the Africa-Italy Summit.

The PM left the country yesterday morning through KMIII Airport.
The 19th Summit of the NMA is the largest grouping of states worldwide after the United Nations.

The prime minister will be joining Eswatini Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mahlaba Mamba and US Political Affairs Vulindlela Kunene, who are already in Uganda participating in the senior officials meeting.

The Summit of Heads of State and Government and Heads of Delegation will commence today and end tomorrow.

It has been disclosed that the summit will consider the report of the Preparatory Ministerial Meeting, review the progress achieved in the implementation of the outcomes of the 18th Summit held in 2019, and conclude with adoption of the Kampala Declaration.

The Italy-Africa Summit was supposed to take place last year in November but it was postponed to this month due to worsening global security. It will take place on January 28 ending on 29.
The Italy-Africa Summit according to a press statement released by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) will be prioritising education.

According to GPE, the Italian Parliament approved an amendment to the Mattei Plan, the Italian Government’s international development scheme aimed at boosting cooperation with African countries, placing education at the heart of its engagement in Africa.

The approved amendment according to GEP underscores the Italian government’s commitment to taking proactive measures to highlight the crucial role of education in advancing sustainable development. This commitment, it was disclosed, will shape both the strategic framework of the Mattei Plan, and the upcoming Italy-Africa Summit, which will host a dedicated session on education facilitated by UNESCO, the (GPE), and Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and the Italian Presidency of the G7.

Laura Frigenti, GPE’s CEO, in the statement applauded the Italian government’s emphasis on education, especially during the upcoming Italy-Africa Summit and the significance that Africa holds during the Italian Presidency of the G7. “This marks a great stride towards more equitable societies as the Italian government commits to upholding the UN 2030 Agenda that calls for providing quality, inclusive, and equitable education for all.”

According to GEP, education will be a central theme throughout 2024, starting with the Italy-Africa Summit and continuing with the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa in February, which will launch the African Year of Education. This will be followed by ministerial meetings and the G7 Summit, all during the Italian Presidency.
