The incoming 12th Parliament will be characterised by a majority of new faces following the secondary elections that took place at the various polling stations in the 59 Tinkhundla Centres around the country.
This comes after the electorate in most constituencies decided to go with ‘new brooms that they hope would sweep clean’ and bring in the much-desired improvements in their livelihoods, and assist in realising the national dream of transforming the country into first world status.
While some are making their first appearance in the august house, but others are making a return, having represented their constituencies before.
These new faces include at least five of the seven winning women Members of Parliament (MPs), Jane Mkhonta-Simelane (Mbabane West MP), Zanele Mashaba (Lomahasha), Nomkhosi Augustin Masuku (Ludzeludze), Lomalanga Dlamini (Mangcongco), Nokuthula Dlamini (Maseyisini) as well as Shawnette Henwood (Shiselweni I).
Also joining the new-look parliament is the youngest MP of this crop, Ntando Mkhonta (28) of Zombodze Emuva, 32-year-old Sabelo Ndlangamandla and businessman Sifiso Mabuza, who will be the Hosea Inkhundla representative and is brother to Mduduzi ‘Bacede’ and Jabulani ‘Buy Cash’ Mabuza.
Other new faces are journalists, including Financial Times Managing Editor Alec Lushaba, who will represent the people of Hhukwini, Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services (EBIS) radio announser Nathi ‘Mdockies’ Hlophe, who will represent the Mtfongwaneni Constituency as well as Times of Eswatini’s Welcome Dlamini, who will represent the people of Mbabane East.
Other newcomers include businessman Mashayinkonjane Nhlengetfwa, who replaces Macford sibandze at Manzini North, former Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (EPTC) marketing manager Charles Ndlovu, who was elected at Ngudzeni, Jericho Church leader Bishop Bhekibandla Vilakati and Malkerns Town Clerk Apollo Maphalala to mention, but a few.
Making a comeback, on the other hand, are Lugongolweni MP Joseph Souza, Lobamba’s Michael Masilela, Manzini South’s Owen Nxumalo, Nkwene’s Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, Lamgabhi’s Sicelo Jele, Mhlume’s Sifiso Magagula and Sandile Nxumalo from Somntongo.
Only a handful of former MPs managed to retain their seats and they include former deputy speaker and Mhlangatane MP Madala Mhlanga, former minister of public service and Maphalaleni MP Mabulala Maseko, former Minister of Agriculture and Pigg’s Peak MP Jabulani Mabuza, former minister of Labour and Social Security and Matsanjeni North MP Phila Buthelezi, former minister of Tinkhundla Administration and Development and Sigwe MP David ‘Cruiser’ Ngcamphalala, Siphocosini’s Mduduzi Matsebula, Lobamba Lomdzala’s Marwick Khumalo and Siphofaneni’s Nomalungelo Simelane.
