The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has announced that Dvokodvweni Inkhundla will hold by-elections following a tie for two candidates.
The by-elections will be held on September 2.
This was announced by EBC Chairperson, Prince Mhlabuhlangene yesterday during a press conference held at Nkhanini.
Prince Mhlabuhlangene stated that in the Lubombo region, Dvokodvweni Inkhundla, Ntandweni Umphakatsi there would be a by-election where there was a tie under the category of Indvuna Yenkhundla.
The chairperson went on to thank the nation for the massive turn-out displayed in the primary elections, which took place over the weekend.
He said shortly after the close of the polls, the counting of results ensued where votes were apportioned to candidates.
The commission announced the results of the primary elections.
The results, according to the chairperson included the consolidation of the results which were cast in four different handles, namely the diaspora vote, votes of the inmates, electoral officials, essential workers and other permitted voters and the primary election votes.
“The commission takes note that during the conduct of the special voting process and counting of votes for the inmates, election observers were present and kept a watchful eye of the proceedings where they could give an account of the process, objectively,” he said.
According to the EBC, the next stage of the elections is the campaign period, where all candidates would be given an opportunity to legitimately canvass for votes.
“The campaign will close on September 27.
The electorate is encouraged to participate in the campaign, especially the ‘organised campaign’ run by EBC, where the audience will be given an opportunity to engage with the candidates in all the categories; indvuna yenkhundla, Member of Parliament and bucopho,” Prince Mhlabuhlangene stated. The prince further stated that despite announcing the results, they were not going to share them with the media yesterday as they had to be gazetted.
According to the chairperson, due to the huge task of compiling the list and making the announcement where there were slip ups, the commission would try to fix those and then issue the gazette, which would be the official and legal results. He said they were announcing the results yesterday in the spirit of trying to be transparent.
The list released by the commission indicated that there were more males than females who have been voted to proceed to the secondary elections. It was also noted that more females entered for the indvuna yenkhundla position.
