FIFTH COVID-19 PATIENT POSITIVE

By NONDUDUZO KUNENE | 2020-03-24

THE ministry of health has revealed that a 52-year-old male who had travelled to the United States of America early this month has tested positive to the novel coronavirus, which causes  COVID-19.

In a statement last night, Health Minister Lizzie Nkosi said the patient was stable and under medical care.

This now brings the total number of patients to five since the first case was reported on March 13, which is about two weeks ago.

The minister announced that 62 other results returned and were found to be negative.

“The ministry of health wishes to re-iterate the importance of cooperating with health advice on prevention measures and especially on self-isolation. All those given this advice are expected to:

n Stay alone in their rooms, away from the rest of the family.

n Use a  mask if they have flu. Visitors should not be allowed into the patient’s room, until discharged.

n Use dedicated linen and eating utensils for the patient. These items should be cleaned with soap and water after use and may be re-used instead of being discarded.

n The patient is not expected to travel to societal gatherings and public places,” the minister said.

She further emphasised on the practice of regular hand washing with soap and water as well as covering mouth and nose using tissue when coughing or sneezing.

Nkosi said the ministry of health would continue to provide updates to the nation on further developments.
