‘BUFFS’ IN CAF E5M CARROT

By Melusi Mlotsa | 2019-09-17

SOCCER –  AS the 2019/20  CAF Confe-derations Cup group stages edges closer, Young Buffaloes stand to pocket about E5 million if they eventually qualify .

In the preliminary rounds of the prestigious tournament, the army side has already brushed aside Zambian side Buildcon FC 2-1 (aggregate score). They went on to beat ABSA Premiership side Bidvest University in the first leg match played on Saturday at Mavuso Sports Centre. The second leg match will be played in South Africa on the weekend of September 27-28.

If Buffaloes beat the ‘Clever boys’ in the second tier, they will then play one more match in the play-off round after the draw to be conducted on October 9.

According to CAF website, 16 teams are expected to qualify for the group stages to commence on November 10. Teams will be divided into four groups of four teams. Fourth placed in group stages are guaranteed for E5 250 000

Remain

This, therefore, means that the army side is 270 minutes away from striking it rich. Capital city giants Mbabane Swallows remain the only local team to reach the group stages in the CAF Champions League.

Young Buffaloes Chief Executive Officer Sandile Gwebu said he was aware of the prizes and monies in the group stages. He said they were, however, focusing at the task at hand.

“We are aware of that there is money if we reach the group stages. We won’t switch our focus on that prize money because that may disturb us, but we will concentrate on taking it one game at a time in order to progress to the next round of the tournament.”

Young Buffaloes qualified for the tournament after winning the EswatiniBank Cup last season.
