FOUR ACTING SUPREME COURT JUDGES SWORN-IN

By Sandile Nkambule | 2019-07-16

At least four acting judges of the Supreme Court of Eswatini were yesterday sworn-in by the chief justice.

The four were previously appointed on an acting basis before their term of acting lapsed hence their re-appointment.

The Chief Justice Bheki Maphalala sworn-in the four in Justices Nkosinathi Manzini, Sabelo Matsebula, Marry Judith Currie and Justice Mavuso.

Currently, there are only six judges of the Supreme Court including the chief justice and these are Justices Prince Senzangakhona Phesheya Dlamini, Stanley Maphalala, Jacobus Annandale, Majahenkhaba Dlamini and Robert Cloete.

The acting judges are expected to curb the backlog of appeal cases at the Supreme Court since there are 58 appeals to be heard this session.

These cases include, amongst others, that of the prime minister and others against former Member of Parliament Michael Masilela, the Anti-Corruption Unit against former Minister Gideon Dlamini, tourism minister and another against Steven Zuke and former Public Service Pensions Fund (PSPF) Chief Executive Officer Cleopas Dlamini and his former wife Cynthia.

Others are those of convicted Johannes Kakona Dlamini against the state, Sikhatsi Dlamini against the mayor of Mbabane Municipal Council, Chief Gasa Wangwane and his sister-in-law Ethel Dlamini and the Regional Education Officer (Hhohho) against Meshack Makhubu.
