SOCCER – Matsapha United’s coach Rhodwell Dhlakama has put yesterday’s defeat to Mbabane Highlanders to a missed chance by striker Johnson Mensah in the second half.
Mensah was gifted an opportunity to put his team in front in the second half when a back pass by Highlanders’ defender Jimmoh Moses fell on his path. He was one-on-one with the keeper, but failed to score just before Highlanders went on to take the lead.
This was during the quarterfinals of the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF) Ingwenyama Cup quarterfinals at Somhlolo Stadium yesterday. “We had many chances to win the game, but I felt Johnson’s miss came at a crucial time. Had he scored that goal, the game could have been wholly different,” he said.
The coach also noted that his team had matched the opposition pound for pound for much of the contest. “If you miss chances like we did, you are normally punished in football. I hope my players learnt from this,” he said.
Highlanders’ coach, Saul Chaminuka rightly put his team’s victory to the changes he made in the second half. He reserved special praise for substitute Thabiso Mokenkoane, whom he said had a big influence on the match.
“The good thing is that we always believed from the start that we could go this far in the competition. I don’t care which team we get in the semi-finals. We will continue to believe,” he said.
