The ministry of information, communication and technology (ICT) will soon submit two critical policies to Cabinet.
These are the broadband and universal access and service policies.
This was said by ICT minister Princess Sikhanyiso who was speaking during the official opening of the ‘Domain Name System (DNS) abuse’ workshop at the Royal Swazi Convention Centre yesterday. “The policies will facilitate for the deployment of services to all corners of the country through all communities, urban and rural. It is therefore imperative to engage neighbouring states to negotiate for favourable transit rates and employ a combination of customer centric market rules and efficient infrastructure use,” she said.
The minister said it is upon the ministry to hyperbolise the need for services that are accessible, affordable and inclusive. She further said the objective of the ministry is to establish progressive policies and usher in a thriving ICT industry that can catapult the country’s economic growth and job creation initiatives to greater heights. This includes the construction of 21st century infrastructure that is reliable, resilient, and robust also solicit a constant inflow of investments to the sector resulting with development, innovation, and start-ups for people.
The minister also believes that the key to quicker and less costly infrastructure is integrated development. She said infrastructure sharing regulations for the ICT industry are already in place and Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) is encouraging operators to make good use of the opportunities as they reduce infrastructure and benefit the consumers in the long-run.
“With these affordable and reliable broadband services, government will advance its policies of decentralisation, education and health for all. In addition, small enterprises from all communities will access markets and suppliers countrywide,” she said.
