JOHANNESBURG - Embattled Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba resigned on Tuesday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted Gigaba's resignation.
“The President has accepted the Minister’s resignation and expressed his appreciation for Minister’s Gigaba longstanding service to the government and people of South Africa,” the Presidency said in a statement.
His resignation comes after the Constitutional Court dismissed his application for leave to appeal a court ruling that he lied under oath.
The Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane also found that he lied under oath during the Fireblade Aviation vs Minister Gigaba case.
Mkhwebane had recommended that Ramaphosa fire Gigaba in 20-days.
Gigaba's private life was also in the spotlight after a video containing sexual material surfaced on social media.
Opposition parties had called for Gigaba to be fired, but he said he would not resign.
Ramaphosa has asked Transport Minister, Blade Nzimande to stand in as Home Affairs minister.
