LOCAL choirs gave their South African counterparts a tough competition at the Old Mutual National Choir KZN Championship over the weekend.
Held at Durban City Hall, KwaZulu Natal on Sunday, the country’s very own Manzini Choir managed to scoop position three overall while Conductor Banele Maphalala known as Mzambiya was crowned best conductor in the Large Category.
Manzini Choir secured 156 points to land in third position after African Chorus with 161 points, while the champions scored 165 points to scoop the top spot.
Banele Maphalala who led the Royal Eswatini Police Service Choir impressed the panel of adjudicators with his skills which saw him being crowned the best conductor of the category.
His choir landed on position five overall.
Manzini brought home a trophy and a E15 000 cash prize while Mzambiya got himself E5 000 for scooping the best conductor prize.
In the Standard Category Pure Voices also left a mark as they were placed on a respectable third position in both Western and African pieces missing with only one point to be placed on third position in overall. They were beaten by Ndwendwe Choral Society with 153 points while they scored 152 points. The champions in the standard category were Prince Msiyeni Choir which got 174 points.
They were followed by Joyful Sounds at second position, Ndwedwe Choral Society narrowly landed on third spot with the local choir settling for position four.
